The field of animal psychology and behavior is the science of studying
how animals think, feel and behave. This study has mostly targeted the
understanding of either “wild animals” or “pest species”
for obvious reasons. However, today with people wanting to understand
their own companion animals better, this field has grown to include a
variety of professionals from animal trainers to various relationship
counseling and behavioral consultants.
Animal Psychologists are usually academically trained professionals.
However since there are only a few schools in the world that offer undergraduate
or graduate training specifically in the field of “applied animal
psychology,” most professionals have other forms of training. The
academic background of these professionals may include animal behavior,
biology, ecology, ethology and psychology.
For more information on training programs, consult a professional animal
behaviorist or psychologist.
