Model for Change

The International Alliance for Animal Therapy and Healing (IAATH) is dedicated to the advancement and awareness of healing and health options for animals.

How to Influence Change

The following offers a process or model developed by Mary Ann Simonds to help animal health professionals organize and initiate local and regional changes to existing paradigms and regulatory restrictions

Become Educated

  • Understand the issues and concerns about what you are doing
  • Know your local, state and national laws, and regulations
  • Understand the intention of the laws and why they were written
  • Know who your legislators and regulators including governing boards
  • Understand the various paradigms and who controls or influences them the most
  • Be qualified in your area of practice
  • Know who are your possible supporters and who may present obstacles

Educate Others - Target the "change makers " - Dissolve fear

  • Develop relationships with key people
  • Present information to other professional and related organizations
  • Inform the public through media and other events
  • Meet with your local representatives or senators and present your concerns
  • Educate your adversaries, as they may become your allies

Get Involved-Think globally, Act locally

  • Become active in local organizations,
  • Become "positioned" favorably with local law makers and the public through participation on boards, task forces, commenting at public hearings , volunteering
  • Teach at local colleges, community education, etc.
  • Write articles for magazines, newsletters of interested organizations, letters to the editor of local newspapers, etc.

Build a Supportive Network

  • Gain media support for your concerns by addressing the consumer and public issues around your cause
  • Develop working relationships with key people and organizations
  • Develop trust and credibility in your profession by working with other professionals
