to Influence Change
The
following offers a process or model developed by Mary Ann
Simonds to help animal health professionals organize and
initiate local and regional changes to existing paradigms
and regulatory restrictions
Become
Educated
- Understand
the issues and concerns about what you are doing
- Know
your local, state and national laws, and regulations
- Understand
the intention of the laws and why they were written
- Know
who your legislators and regulators including governing
boards
- Understand
the various paradigms and who controls or influences them
the most
- Be
qualified in your area of practice
- Know
who are your possible supporters and who may present obstacles
Educate
Others - Target the "change makers "
- Dissolve fear
- Develop
relationships with key people
- Present
information to other professional and related organizations
- Inform
the public through media and other events
- Meet
with your local representatives or senators and present
your concerns
- Educate
your adversaries, as they may become your allies
Get
Involved-Think globally, Act locally
- Become
active in local organizations,
- Become
"positioned" favorably with local law makers
and the public through participation on boards, task forces,
commenting at public hearings , volunteering
- Teach
at local colleges, community education, etc.
- Write
articles for magazines, newsletters of interested organizations,
letters to the editor of local newspapers, etc.
Build
a Supportive Network
- Gain
media support for your concerns by addressing the consumer
and public issues around your cause
- Develop
working relationships with key people and organizations
- Develop
trust and credibility in your profession by working with
other professionals
Help
other organizations with similar visions or concerns
